Hello, it's nice to meet you! My name is Ashley Bierma. I am from DeMotte, Indiana, which is about an hour and a half away from Chicago. It is a very rural town with a population of only 4,000 people, but it is surrounded by nature and is a very pretty place. I graduated from Purdue University this year, 2024, with a major in Visual Communication Design (graphic design) and minors in Japanese, Communication, and Art History. Since I was a middle schooler I have always had an interest in Japan, but it was not until my Senior year of high school that I seriously started self-studying Japanese. Thanks to taking Japanese classes and meeting wonderful Japanese professors in university, I started to think that I wanted to do a job involving Japan and Japanese. The first time I went to Japan was for a summer study abroad program last year in 2023. I studied at Nanzan University in Nagoya and lived with a host family. I was able to experience all sorts of fun culutral exchange, and my host family introduced me to the JET program's CIR position. When I returned to America, I had a new ignited passion that I wanted to do an American-Japanese cultural exchange job , and it is an honor to be able to fulfill my dream with the JET program. I hope to be able to interact and exchange with the people of Takikawa and create fun memories.
<Thoughts on Takikawa>
I am from a very small, rural city, so I am very happy that Takikawa has so many wonderful shops and things to do. I have never lived in a place with mountains before, so I think its wonderful that anywhere you look, you can see the mountains. I often ride to numerous places on my bicycle, and when I see all the flowers blooming and the wonderful gardens, I really feel that the people of Takikawa love their city. I have heard it snows a lot in the winter, so I am looking forward to seeing Hokkaido winter scenery.
<Events I would like to do>
I love drawing and art, so I would love to do an event involving art. I think that art is something that can deeply connect people no matter their age or nationality, so I would be so happy if I would be able to create deep exchange and relationships with art. For example, I would like to try and do a drawing class for children and an event exploring the similarites between Japanese art and American art. I would also love to try an event where people could come into contact with American culture. For one of these, I would love to share some unique celebrations and food often seen on America's Independence Day (4th of July)
<趣味>
<Hobbies>
I have loved drawing for 11 years. I usually draw digitally on my Ipad. Drawing is something that is very stress-relieving for me, so being able to draw my favorite things is the best! I also enjoy reading books both in English and Japanese. My favorite Japanese book is "The Witch of the West is Dead." It really struck a chord with me and I cried a lot. I reccommend it to everyone. My favorite Japanese author is Aoyama Michiko, and besides for four books(I am in the middle of reading them!), I have read all of her novels. When I was in high school, I started to become really interested in Japanese traditional culture thanks to falling in love with studying Japanese. Particularly, I like kimono and have found the more you research, the world of kimono opens up. I love kimono dressing and history.(I think my favorite kimono periods are the Sengoku period and Showa period! Edo period is also wonderful too.) Overall, I really like trying new things and learning about new topics. I hope from now on, I am able to experience a lot more of traditional Japanese culutre!
I am looking forward to working with you all from now on! It is an honor to be picked as one of the Takikawa CIRs. I will work hard at my job! Let's all enjoy life in Takikawa together!

Hello! My name is Lauren, and I hail from the American state of Virginia. I, like both of my parents before me, was born and raised in the Washington, D.C. area, a place very similar to and yet quite different from Takikawa City. I graduated from a Virginia college, Christopher Newport University, in 2019 with a major in Sociology and a minor in Asian Studies. Now with the honor of joining the JET Program as a CIR, I hope to do whatever I can to support the people of Takikawa.
Takikawa is in a lot of ways what a city should be: accessible, peaceful, natural. My hometown is relatively peaceful and surrounded by nature, but America is certainly a nation of cars, and Springfield is no exception. I love how even in a city as large as Takikawa, I can walk to the train station, my workplace, and the supermarket easily and at my own convenience. It allows me the opportunity to step outside and get to know my surroundings in a way I was often unable to even at home.
If possible, I would love to host a music-related event! My interest in the Japanese language stemmed from my love for Japanese songs, particularly vocal synthesizers, and this passion is something I am eager to share and explore with others. Lately, there have been more and more high-quality vocal synths created for the English language, allowing more and more people to experience the unique charm of this type of music. Even across different languages and cultures, an appreciation for music is something we all share, and certainly something worth celebrating.
<趣味>
Ever since I was in elementary school, my first and foremost hobby has been playing video games! Like most kids my age, I started with Pokemon, only I never really stopped. These days, I especially enjoy mobile and online games, though I've always got room for an indie Steam game or two, and console will always hold a special place in my heart.
Aside from gaming, I also love listening to vocal synth music! I've listened to hundreds if not thousands of songs over the years, and I've enjoyed every second of it. Even now, I'm eagerly waiting for EZFG, *Luna, or Hitoshizuku x Yama△ to put out another great song.
